Zao Onsen has the largest collection of hot springs in Yamagata Prefecture with 5 hot spring source groups and 47 individual hot springs. The acidic sulphur waters of the hot springs are rumored to give bathers beautiful skin and the smell of the sulphur establishes and enhances the atmosphere of this old hot spring town. Relaxing in the sulphur baths is also a wonderful way to refresh oneself after a full day on the slopes.
There are 3 public “Onsen” (hot spring baths) in Zao: KAMIYU, SHIMOYU, and KAWARAYU
They are open from 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM every day.

Zao Onsen is surrounded by the richness of nature. One of the best places to enjoy the scenery and the feel of the land is from a “rotenburo” open air bath. There are 3 to choose from.
